How the speed is calculated

Typing tests count a word as five key depressions, spaces included. Gross speed is your keystrokes divided by five, per minute. Net speed subtracts one word per minute for every word that is wrong, missed or extra, so accuracy matters as much as speed. Key depressions per hour (KDPH) is the measure used for data entry tests. This tool compares your words with the passage word by word, so one skipped word counts as one mistake instead of shifting every word after it.

Typing tests in government recruitment

Clerk, assistant, stenographer and data entry posts in SSC, high courts, state staff selection boards and many PSUs include a typing skill test on a computer. A common benchmark is 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi — SSC treats these as about 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour — and data entry operator tests ask for a key-depression rate instead. The test is qualifying, but only at the speed, duration, font and keyboard layout named in your notification, so read it and practise in the same setup.

Kruti Dev, Remington and Mangal

Kruti Dev is a Hindi font typed on the Remington (typewriter) layout, still used in many offices and court typing tests. Computer-based tests often use Unicode Hindi in the Mangal font with either the Remington (GAIL) layout — the same key positions as Kruti Dev — or the InScript layout. This test uses the Kruti Dev / Remington key positions and shows the result as Unicode, so you can practise without installing any font. To move practice text between Kruti Dev and Unicode, use the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter.

How to type faster

Keep your fingers on the home row and use all ten fingers; look at the screen, not the keyboard; aim for accuracy first and let speed follow; and practise 20 to 30 minutes a day with a timer. Take the 10-minute test once a week to see whether your speed holds up over the length of a real skill test.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Kruti Dev font for this Hindi typing test?
No. Type the keys exactly as you would in Kruti Dev; the test converts them and shows Unicode Hindi, so it works on any computer.
How is net speed calculated?
Net speed = (keystrokes ÷ 5 − wrong words) ÷ minutes. A word that is misspelt, skipped or extra counts as one wrong word.
Does the typing test work on a mobile phone?
Use a computer with a physical keyboard — that is what the skill test uses. The English test also works with a phone keyboard, but the Hindi Kruti Dev mode needs a physical keyboard.
What typing speed is needed for SSC CHSL?
SSC CHSL has used 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi for clerk posts and a data entry speed in key depressions per hour for DEO posts. Always check the speed and rules in the current notification.
