How a central government salary is built

Pay is fixed by the 7th CPC pay matrix: each Level has 40 'cells' and you move up one cell (a 3% raise) every year on 1 January or 1 July. On top of the basic pay you get Dearness Allowance (now 60% of basic), House Rent Allowance (30%, 20% or 10% of basic for X, Y and Z class cities, since DA crossed 50%), and Transport Allowance, which itself carries DA. NPS (or the Unified Pension Scheme) deducts 10% of basic + DA, and the government adds 14% to your pension account.
